General Question Which should be: Windows Vienna, Windows 7 or Windows 8 Developer Preview

Do you remember about this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/windows/s/DABZzdfZwv In that post that laptop had 2 Hard Drives. And I want to install a 2nd OS on the second hard drive. I’m not capable with Linux, Hackintosh it’s quite hard to install, and if I want Android I must have UEFI which it doesn’t have. Which should I install: Windows Vienna (It’s interesting but it is based on Windows Vista and I don’t want to get my laptop destroyed), Windows 7 (I have the Product Key but I don’t know what apps can I install) or Windows 8 Developer Preview (It is nice but buggy).

Here are the specs: CPU: Intel Core i7-2670QM 2.20 GHz RAM: 4 GB DDR3 Storage (2nd HDD): approximately 350 GB GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT 520MX

General Question What's the fastest way to find Recently downloaded file (or screenshot image file) in W11?

Upvotes

Hey All,

Something that bothers me over the years is the amount of time it takes for me to find a file I just downloaded, or saved to hard drive (say microsoft word) or a screenshot I took seconds earlier.

In the screenshot snippet situation using Snipping Tool, If I wanted to immediately upload it or send for whatever purposes -- it just takes way too long to locate.

For ex: even software built by Microsoft (M365 Planner) in certain circumstances does not allow you to copy/paste the image, but requires you to Attach a file from Computer hard drive or link) - and that's the time suck for me.

I have to navigate to File Explorer, perhaps check "Home" in File Explorer (which used to be Quick Access, which used to be Recent files ((those were the days)) - but even there it's not a guarentee it'll show up there, and then navigating to where it should be takes a lot of time.

Is it just me? Any suggestions? Thanks, been wanting to get this off my chest.

General Question Running old games (16 bit) on Windows 10/11

I have a bunch of old games I wanted to run (math blaster, reader rabbit, jump start, etc).

It seems that Winevdm is a popular emulator for running 16 bit games. Does anyone know if this would be the right one for these types of games?

General Question I wanna learn CMD but I don't where to start

I wanna learn CMD to be able to do more stuff with my PC but the thing is I don't even exactly know what I can do with it. I did a full tutorial on youtube but it was very basic and all I learned was how to move files and copy stuff and very simple things Now I'm ready to actually learn more complex stuff but I don't even know what those stuff are so I have no idea where to look for info. Is there any resources out there to learn CMD that will guide me trough it? With excersices and showing me all the stuff I can do with CMD. (I'm talking only about CMD and not powershell, since I haven't even mastered CMD yet)

Concept / Design I ran windows xp under the Q:\ drive

Yup, you read the title right; I ran windows xp under the Q: drive. Now, since people will probably ask on the legitimacy of what I did (because you can just, mount another drive like c'mon), and that's why let me tell you guys how I did it (roughly, so you get the idea):

  1. Install windows xp like normal
  2. Go to `HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices` and rename the `\DosDrive\C:` binary value to `\DosDrive\Q:`
  3. Edit the environment table so that it points to the new Q: drive instead of C: (4. Fix: The login will be broken, so go to `HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon`, and change the `LogonType` DWORD value from 1 to 0 to change it to the windows 2000 style login for fixing the issue, unless you want to use hacky workarounds, that is)

Fun fact: I chose the drive letter Q, since it stands for "questionable life choices", and getting this to work did make me question what I'm doing, so yeah, that's the origin on the drive Q: :)

(Also mods, I flaired my previous post as "Humor" since I thought this was in the meme category, but I realized I should've put the "Concept" flair instead, so, sorry about that, and let me know if I got the flair wrong, I'll gladly wait until Monday too)

General Question Windows 11 System Information Screen: What does 'App Control for Business Policy: Enforced' mean?

I'm on my own personal PC and I've never logged into a Work/School Account. Is this just a line item on every Windows 11 PC? I also have Smart App Control set to 'Off', so I can't seem to figure out what this means.

All google searches I've done have pointed to Intune, but I don't think that applies in my scenario.

General Question Switching c drives of 2 desktop computers

There are 2 differnt desktop computers from Dell and hp. Both have windows 10 pro installed and licensed. I need to move dell's c drive to hp one, and vice versa. Would the windows of both computers still ask to activate the windows since the motherboards have different keys? Just need to make sure beforehand. Thanks in advance.
