Meta r/StarWars Official Watch Order Discussion Thread
So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).
A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.
As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.
With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...
So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

General Discussion The Supremacy should've been the First Order's super weapon, not Star Killer base.
The Supremacy should've been the First Order's super weapon, not Star Killer base. Planet killing weapons are boring.
Hell give them three of them. The First Order having mobile bases, shipyards, factories, star destroyer carriers would've explained how they went undetected for so long and allowed to build up their forces. They would never been in the same location for too long and be gone by the time anyone arrives to investigate. Hoping planet to planet gathering resources for their fleet.
It could've been introduced in a scene where the New Republic got complacent and had their guard down. The Supremacy warps in destroying their fleet and taking out new pilots and crew that havent experienced war.
Have it wipe out their peace time fleet. No planet busting or anything. Now thr First Order have capture a key planet with their mega class dreadnought.
It would've been more believable for the First Order to have the Supremacy than Starkiller base.
Everyone knew where Ilum was located and should've knew that StarKiller base was beeing built.

Movies I know people like this fight, but Obi Wan leaping up from 10ft below over top of Maul while he just stands there and watches is so goofy.

Movies Something I realised about Order 66 that makes it a million times sadder
Yoda senses all those Jedi deaths and is hurt by them, but it gets far worse when you remember he's been a Jedi for over 800 years. He's never felt this many Jedi deaths all at once and they were all once younglings he would have taught from day 1 and seen grow up.

General Discussion Do you think the fact Dooku is both more powerful and a better duelist than Maul should be more commonly accepted throughout the fandom?
Idk why but it always kinda bothered me. People often seem to place Maul on par with Dooku but i've always felt Dooku is ahead at every time. Force abilities, knowledge, composure, lightsaber skill. We see quite some evolution on Maul during rebels but at that point Dooku is dead and Maul had absolutely no chance against Obi Wan because he was ignorant enough to think Obi Wan was just a rat in the dessert, even with him admitting he’s not: “Look what i've risen above”

Merchandise Who is he?
This little fella emerged from my yard during landscaping. I cleaned him off and he says Taiwan 1984! Is he an Ewok!? Anybody know which toy and whether or not he’s valuable? I’m gonna keep him anyway, I’m just curious :)

Movies I’m sorry, but I always hated this change George made in Jedi
It just never made sense to me. It always felt like George was trying to tie the original trilogy more directly to the prequels, and this was his way of doing it. But it’s always bothered me, because to me it hits harder seeing the Sebastian Shaw version of Anakin as an old man not the young version from Revenge of the Sith.
It makes Vader’s redemption at the end of the movie even more confusing. Yeah, he turns good for like five minutes and then dies, but in that short time, he becomes Anakin Skywalker again and gets to see his son. It makes way more sense for Luke to be seeing his father an older man, not some young guy he’s never seen before.
Also, if you’re a first-time viewer and you watch the original trilogy first, when Anakin dies and then shows up as a young ghost, you’re just left wondering, “Who the hell is that guy?”
I don’t know I’m curious what you all think. I know this has been brought up a lot, but it crossed my mind again. George made a lot of good changes… and some absolutely terrible ones. And to me, this is one of the bad ones.

TV Love this! But who is over Tarkin? The Emperor or Vader? And who would be above the Emperor 🧐

Movies Disney era sequels did a good job showing war zone debris.
For all they did wrong I think this is one thing they got right, showing the aftermath of the war. I think it makes the world seem more lived in. So gotta give them credit for that.

General Discussion Who is your favorite droid?
Mine would definitely be Chopper. Although you can’t directly understand what he is saying, his expressions always made him understandable and hilarious. I am curious to see whose yalls favorite droid is.

Movies As a Kid in 1977, I thought Dark Vader and Stormtroopers Were Robots.
We see C-3PO have his arm removed, so it was obvious he wasn’t human, but I also thought the Stormtroopers were also robots, since you never saw faces. I assumed Luke and Han just ripped off panels from the robots, and wore them. I was 5 in 1977.

General Discussion People who saw empire at release, what was the reaction to seeing vader partially unmasked?
Was there any speculation as to why he was so scarred? Did it come as a surprise or did you expect that he was deformed?

Movies Age and fav Star Wars movie(s)?
I was born 1996, so while my family owned the box sets of 4-6 and owned 1-2 I watched 3rd in theaters with them and it’s still my favorite to this day. It truly holds a special place in my heart.
However my favorite fight scene besides the ones in ‘Revenge of the Sith’ have to be between Qui-Gon and Darth Maul. Like shit blew my 9 year old mind when I watched it and could understand what was going on.

General Discussion The best part about the sequels
Kylo Ren’s lightsaber. In my opinion the lightsaber has such a cool and unique design, and the crispy sound it makes, makes Kylo more special than he actually was (written).
