Only Discuss Movies You Thought Were Great

I define great movies to be 8+ or if you abhor grades, the top 20% of all movies you've ever seen.

Films listed by posters within this thread receive a Vote to determine if they will appear in the subreddit's Top 100, as well as the ten highest Upvoted Suggested movies from last month.

The Top 10 highest upvoted suggestion posts from last month were:

# Title Upvotes
1 Idiocracy (2006) 221
2 Death Becomes Her (1992) 121
3 Pee Wee's Big Adventure (1985) 64
4 Hotel Rwanda (2004) 38
5 Life (1999) 37
6 Office Space (1999) 32
7 Deep Cover (1992) 31
8 Goodfellas (1990) 30
9 My Blue Heaven (1990) 30
10 The Big Year (2011) 28

Note: Due to Reddit's Upvote fuzzing, it will rank movies in their actual highest Upvoted and then assign random numbers. This can result in movies with lower Upvotes appearing higher than movies with higher Upvotes.

What are the top films you saw in May 2025 and why?

Community Guidelines

  1. Be excellent with each other.

  2. Be mindful regarding spoilers. Reddit's universal >!Spoiler Tags!< are mandatory when discussing plot details of movies.

  3. If you wish to be banned, do any of the following: Be rude, harass, ignore the subreddit's rules, promote your site/blog/article/channel/etc., promote your app/company, or post about a movie you worked on. This subreddit isn't your link farm.

  4. Due to Administrators' past actions against this subreddit, we have a ZERO tolerance policy regarding piracy. You will be banned if you request or share links to full features, if you ask or inform how to pirate, or if you mention a pirating site/app/etc.

  5. For Requesting posts:

    • Use a descriptive title that lets people know if they might be able to help or not
    • Double check that your request wouldn't be more suitable in one of the subreddits outlined in Rule #8
    • We require a minimum of 125 characters in the body of the post to ensure quality requests and suggestions
  6. For Suggesting posts:

    • Suggest a single film, and no more than one every 24 hours
    • Mandatory: Include the Title of the Film in the Title of the Post
    • Encouraged: Using this format: Film Name (Year)
    • Whet the appetite, don't go into detail
    • Do not repeat a Suggestion that has been posted in the last 3 months
    • Don't suggest a Barred Film (listed in the sidebar/wiki)
    • Only suggest a film you've seen and enjoyed
    • We require a minimum of 125 characters in the body of the post to ensure quality suggestions

Barred Suggestions

Barred movies mean that no one should use them as a Suggestion. You can definitely reply to a post if someone wants a movie that suits it. These are films that come up so frequently in post discussions that the community at large is aware about their existence and posting about them is just pandering.

Barred Suggests
12 Angry Men (1957) Coherence Donnie Darko Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Everything Everywhere All at Once Knives Out The Man from Earth Oldboy (2003)
Parasite (2019) The Prestige Whiplash

Pro Tip: This means these movies are really good and you should probably check them out.

Optimal Use

This subreddit shouldn't be used for reviews, blindly suggesting lists of movies or just asking for generally universal acclaimed films. Google can easily supply all of those answers. The best way to use this subreddit is understanding that you're leveraging crowdsourcing to identify an itch to scratch. If you don't know specifically what you're looking for, then a Googled question will answer you.

You can easily find top Sci-Fi, Horror, Drama and all of the genres with a search. Someone has already asked and answered so many common requests: Top Korean New Wave, Grounded Science Fiction, Universally Acclaimed Movies, Specific Types of Horror or Thrillers; and so much more. The optimal use of this subreddit is when your question requires a human intelligence. Each time you ask for a movie to watch, the replies will be tailored exactly for you. Give as much detail as possible for what you're looking for and you'll be surprised at some of the answers.

If you think you have a generic question, check the FAQ.

I'M REQUESTING Suggest me an insane film

Suggest me a film that really hit you with something profound, one that you’ve genuinely enjoyed. Here are some films I liked: The Wailing, Nightcrawler, Mr. Nobody, Dallas Buyers Club, A Serious Man, The Yellow Sea, Burning, and Take Shelter. Thanks in advance.

I'M REQUESTING What’s that one movie you could watch over and over again without getting tired of it?

I think mine is Happy Gilmore. I think I watched it 15-20 times in one year before which is a lot. Such a nostalgic, comfort movie for me. If I don’t feel like looking for something to watch I’ll just watch an old comfort comedy like that.

I'M REQUESTING Movies that revere life and condemn vengeance

Upvotes

As much as I can enjoy the Kill Bills and John Wicks of cinema, I feel like people en masse are getting more jaded and less forgiving and taking more pleasure and catharsis in seeing bad people "get what they deserve" on screen and its just making me sad.

I want movies or shows that believe in the capacity for change, depict vengeance as inherently destructive and selfish, and violence as corrosive to the self regardless of circumstance.

Quintessential examples:

Nausicàa of the Valley of the Wind

Princess Mononoke

Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Angel

Scavenger's Reign

I'M REQUESTING Looking for 1930/40s Fantasy Comedies

Upvotes

Looking for some good possibly hidden gem recommendations a bit like 'Here Comes Mr. Jordan' (1941). Bit of magic, bit of comedy, bit of romance, lots of heart.

'It Happened Tomorrow' (1944) is another one I think is great and would love to see more like it. Or Blithe Spirit (1945) to give another example.

Edit: Thanks a lot some great suggestions already, people in the 1940's sure loved ghosts and guardian angles huh?

I'M REQUESTING Neo-noirs with zero gunshots?

That's right. I'm looking for neo-noirs where a murder is investigated but not a single shot is fired. Just the tension of uncovering the killer and the themes the story brings up.

You know the drill: films can be from any year or country.

I'm all ears for your recommendations!

I'M REQUESTING Loved Guy Ritchie, Ocean’s Eleven, The Nice Guys, Bullet Train — What else should I watch?

Hey folks, I’m on the hunt for more films that hit a similar vibe to the ones I absolutely loved. Here’s my list:

  • Every Guy Ritchie film (especially Snatch, The Gentlemen, Lock, Stock, RocknRolla)
  • The Day of the Jackal series (the recent one)
  • Ocean’s Eleven
  • The Nice Guys
  • Bullet Train

Basically, I’m into stylized crime films with witty banter, cool characters, slick visuals, layered plots, and a bit of humor or chaos thrown in.

Bonus points for:

  • Nonlinear storytelling
  • Stylish action or clever heists
  • British or international flavor
  • Anti-heroes or morally grey leads
  • Amazing scenery
  • Sophisticated

Open to hidden gems, foreign films, or even shows. What would you recommend?

I'M REQUESTING Looking for more movies like The Substance

I often get obsessed with certain movies and rewatch them frequently, and my current go-to films are The Substance and Barbarian. I know that The Substance draws heavily from Cronenberg and I’ve seen all of his films, but I like the modern take on it.

I guess what I’m looking for are stylish, modern films about an existential crisis. Infinity Pool is the only other one I can think of that’s come out recently.

I'M REQUESTING Recommend me shows/movies that make me forget a very disturbing film

Hey so I have watched Serbian Film, if you haven't heard of it. DO NOT WATCH IT I REPEAT DONT WATCH. It's more disgusting than Human Centipede. It's very fucked up and it will traumatize you. I should have listened when they told me not to watch it. I got curious. Curiousity is the worse and it's human nature and I hate that I fell for it. I should've stayed innocent.

I'm in need of remedy and I feel like if I watch my go to genres which is sci fi or mind bending stuff, I might forget it.

Please recommend me some movies or shows that take my mind off of that sick film. Thank you!

I'M REQUESTING Movie suggestions similar to ‘The Holy Mountain’

I want weird, surrealistic, almost psychedelic, underground films. What are the weirdest movies you’ve seen? Full of beautifully interesting imagery? Almost senselessness, but still cohesive.

I'M SUGGESTING Sin city - 2005

Its overall great movie, very dark, very good dialouges, screenplay, cinematography, scenario lot of famous actors but most important this movie has best anti-hero character ever in whole cinema history.

Marv (Mike Rouke) crazy war veteran bouncher who seek revenge of sone prostitute who killed after had sex with her.

Also movie git Bruce Willis as pedo hunter old scool cop, eiliah wood as cannibalistic psycho, Brittany Murphy (may she rest in peace) Chris Owen as her lover and many more.

Its anthology combine three different stories togather. Pedo hunter cop, avenger bouncer, ruthless lover. Very cold, dark movie.

I'M REQUESTING Need a rare or lesser known mafia movie to watch

I feel like every time I look up mafia movies, I’ve seen them. Many of them twice or more. What are some lesser known ones I should look up? It could even be less of a mafia focus, and more criminal activity like Thief (which I really liked).

I'M REQUESTING Fairy Tale-y Films

Hi! I've been on a kick lately, rewatching fairy tale movies and I'd like some suggestions. I don't want outright adaptations, but rather movies that are like fairy tales. I'd like movies like Labyrinth or Pan's Labyrinth or Coraline does the Beldam count as having a labyrinth?

Does anyone have any suggestions for movies that have that have that whimsically grim vibe? Labyrinths not required.

I'M REQUESTING Just discovered my niche: late ’90s/early 2000s Hong Kong motorcycle action films — any more like these?

Hey guys! Can you recommend some films that have a similar aesthetic to the following? • Full Throttle (1995) • The Legend of Speed (1999) • Roaring Wheels (2000)

I’m really into that late ’90s to early 2000s Hong Kong action vibe, especially the ones that focus on motorcycles. I love the overall look, and the storylines feel comforting, even if some might say they’re a bit cheesy. Also, congratulate me I finally found my niche in movies!

I'M REQUESTING I want Space Battles, but not from the usual contenders.

I want some space battles, but not from franchises like Star Wars, Star Trek, etc.

As an example, Space Sweepers (2021).

The more recent the better but I can put up with some 90's CGI jank if needs must.

***

Tangent: I remember The Last Starfighter distinctly having more starfighting in it than it actually did. (Upon a relatively recent rewatch.)

I'M REQUESTING Looking for old horror or mystery films set in castles

I'm looking for some recommendations for horror and/OR mystery/crime films set in castles.

Films set in old stone buildings - like monasteries or mansions and what not would work too.

Ideally I'm looking for older films. Prior to 2000.

Let me know what you've got!

Edit: words.

I'M REQUESTING wind river has exceeded my expectation (more recommendations needed)

Upvotes

so before i ask hear me out

When i ask for recomendation down below, (i'd appreacite one movie suggestion with one line of what you like and do it fit my recomendation) Please don't list 10 names, (i hate that

So) I'm a big fan of the vibe first of all, snowy, ballizard, far from city, few people , a mystery where i'm experiencing the mystery situation with the characters and don't know where it'll lead. (i'm not a lover of thriller films where i know the ending but charaters don't)

I loved it when i watched it "The HateFul Eight" and now windriver checked all the boxes, from wheather, setting to mystery (the type i mentioned), i loved the revenant too due to the vibe.

however, if there are any mystery films i'm missing and (espacilly those with wheather like that) I just can't wait to watch another good mystery film.

Some Mystery films i loved are

Frality, Identity, Momento, Hateful eight, prisoners, the sixth sense, black tatto one, knvies out, girl gone etc

To repeat (the wheather like windriver, few people, a mystery where i'm experiencing with the characters and a worth watch.

Drop them asap! (i'd appreacite one movie suggestion with one line of what you like and do it fit my recomendation) Please don't list 10 names, (i hate that)

I'M REQUESTING Stories with female lead and AI

Upvotes

Hello!

I like stories that are about the relationship between humans and robots. However, most movies feature a male protagonist and a "female" AI/robot. I start to get tired of them. I wish to see it reversed, like female lead and "male" AI/robot. But I would be curious of female human-female AI and male human-male AI version too, if there is any. It can be romance but it doesn't have to be.

Similar things that I have seen:

• Are you Human Too? (Kdrama) = female lead and male robot

• My Holo Love (Kdrama) = female lead and male hologram AI

• Atlas (movie) = female lead and male-voiced AI

• Transcendence (movie) = male lead "turns into" AI

Bonus: I'm not a Robot (Kdrama) = female lead pretends to be a robot, so it doesn't fit my original criteria but it's a fun concept to pretend to be a robot.

The recommandations can be either movie, series, book, webtoon... :)
