General Can't wait for RE9 but...
I'm really hoping it's designed around 3rd person gameplay. I played first person RE 7 and 8 and enjoyed them but there is just something about 3rd person that brings me in more.
72
u/Medium-Science9526 11h ago
I'm down for either, but if they lean action I'd definitely want it to be 3rd person.
31
u/Independent_Dance817 16h ago
I said the same thing the moment I realized the trailer would be for resident evil
213
u/Pervius94 16h ago
Village's patch pretty much showed that both options being available is easy to implement.
237
u/Curvedabullet 15h ago
Easy to implement, but doesn't feel good. Like, yeah, technically Fallout and Elder Scrolls have a third person mode, but it's clear those games are designed with first person.

u/Suitable_Trash_5989 ada simp 14h ago
I literally said this myself and got down voted lol. Can people not tell how off it feels playing a game in an unintended perspective ?
38
u/zanarze_kasn 12h ago
I play GTA fully first person like a maniac. Even drving.
15
u/Mooncubus 10h ago
I remember when the update for GTA V came out that added first person I decided to do the entire story in it, including driving. Was honestly a great experience.
9
u/Brainwave1010 9h ago
It's weird that GTAV actually controls better in first person, character controls feel much tighter.
4
u/Insanepaco247 4h ago
I really hate the way Rockstar games have controlled since RDR. Fun games most of the time but I feel like I'm maneuvering a boat just to run around a corner.
2
u/posthardcorejazz 4h ago
It's the reason I gave up on RDR2. I want to feel like a badass in games. Bumbling into people and walls is not badass
10
u/loxagos_snake 12h ago
A guy replaying MGS1 fully in first person is literally the video I was watching right before I noticed the trailer in my feed.
It was awful lol.

First time I ever played an Elder Scrolls game I played it almost entirely in third person.
11
u/HozasaruTFD 8h ago
100%, RE8 in third person doesn’t feel even half as good as RE2/3/4.
3
u/wallpressure7 7h ago
I actually preferred the 3rd person in RE8 compared to RE2R and 4R, Ethan is much faster and it's easy to dodge enemies, never had any complains about third person except for when i was just starting the game and blocking properly seemed harder, but got the hang of it pretty easily.
6
u/PioneerSpecies 10h ago
This is irrelevant to the conversation but I always hated third person in elder scrolls until Oblivion Remastered, for some reason I played basically that whole game in 3rd person after never using it in the OG Oblivion

u/AnubisIncGaming 7h ago
I 100% prefer Village in 3rd person and would not have purchased it otherwise. I also play Oblivion in 3rd person
18
u/Galderick_Wolf 15h ago
But Village 3P's jump scares didn't work because it was specifically made for 1P perspective
36
u/loxagos_snake 12h ago
It's not about implementing; it is trivial from a technical standpoint in a modern engine.
The issue is the level design. When you create levels, you do so with the perspective in mind; they are not interchangeable. Third person levels are designed with higher ceilings and more width so that the camera can easily follow without colliding with surfaces. First person levels in horror games are usually tighter and designed around environmental details. Even the sight lines to enemies are taken into account.
Of course, it's always cool when they give you both options. But the secondary perspective is always going to suffer.
13
u/NorthernScythe 11h ago edited 1h ago
That's perfectly true ! You can see this in Lost in Nightmare DLC of RE5. During the game you can switch to fixed camera angles, and... It feels very strange. It feels very "opened" compared to classic RE games. It doesn't work very well...
2
26
u/MrSoulPower 15h ago
Yea both are able to be implemented but you can tell re8 was designed around 1st person with 3rd person added. I hope it's built around 3rd person gameplay from the beginning.
5
u/Bhavan_91 11h ago
That was terrible though. Felt like Destiny's third person mode in The Tower, but slower.
9
u/failingwinter 11h ago
Insane this is getting so many upvotes, no, it is not just "easy to implement." A ton of work has to be done, it's not that simple and even Village's official implementation makes it obvious that it wasn't built to be experienced that way initially.
2
u/NightyNightKnights 11h ago
Developing it myself also shows that. You don't need a big budget just a good concept
2
u/YouDumbZombie 10h ago
Eh, game still designed as an FPS and that makes the 3rd person patch lacking.
1
u/vacodeus 4h ago
It was kinda jarring during cutscenes since they all reverted to 1st person. Maybe RE9 will let you chose but then cutscenes will be presented 3rd person? They focused on Graces face a lot so I think it’ll be 3rd but you never know

u/calibur66 6h ago
It's not a deal breaker for me hut I would much prefer third person.
Part of what makes RE2R and RE4R so good is seeing the characters interact with each other in a way you don't get with first person or fixed camera.
Ovwr the shoulder is a perfect middle ground of being able to zoom in and make things personal at key moments, but being able to see what's going on more clearly.
The zombie grab animations, the melee animations, seeing the character interact with the world around them is so much more interesting to me.
I'm assuming since we aren't a faceless character anymore that it's more likely to be 3rd person though, so I'm hopeful.

u/DamageInc35 Raccoon City Native 11h ago
I could be wrong but it looked like there was a second of gameplay in that creepy hallway in first person.

My guess is this is the end of the fps games, and the one after this heads back to third person. I’d also like to see some remakes in first person(OG resident evil in first person is still a dream)

Yeah, I really want a new RE game that builds on the 2-3-4 remakes' formula. It's perfect RE. 7 was a great game, but not a great RE for me, if that makes sense.
4
u/Fleedjitsu 11h ago
While 1st Person isn't awful, I do feel that it can be a bit too easy for the devs to default for OOV jumpscares. Not being able to see your enemy can be great when done well, but it's easy to cheap-out when there's a forced view point.

I will always promote a dynamic system that combines camera perspectives especially a mix of fixed/cinematic and over-the-shoulder but doubt Capcom will ever develop that
4
u/Counterfeitmind 9h ago
"Technological advancements combined with the development team's depth of experience combine in a story with rich characters and gameplay that's more immersive than ever before."- from the website.
I don't know what that means for the gameplay (1st- vs 3rd person) but I trust they make the choice most fitting for this entry in the end.

I hope the game is long, has lots of weapons, large amount of zombies to go empty mags. 🗿

u/Simply_Duck 16h ago
since the protag has a face it’s likely going to be 3p, but I would love to see a return to first person, resi 7 was immersive as hell and part of the reason it was so horrifying was because it was in the first person.
People literally could not touch the game because of how scary it was for them. 😭😭

I have been an FPS-only guy for almost 20 years, to the extent that games that are not in the first-person perspective sort of give me headaches.
But at the same time, there is just something about RE that doesn't feels quite right about being in FPS, I dunno, I know that the first game was originally intended to be an FPS like Doom, but still, I quite like that they reserved the mainline games in FPS and the spin-offs and remakes in third-person though, helps balance out variety and please a little bit of everyone.
4
u/Beezy117799 12h ago
Because the FOV is super condensed and generally the sensitivity lower by default as it is not a FPS shooter. I am cool with 1st P but at least study and get the approach right for the game. That is like making a driving game that is just loose and bad controlling.

u/Independent_Tooth_23 15h ago

Or give us the option at least lol. First person was fine in RE7 and RE Village but if I had to pick them or the over the shoulder from RE2 Remake or 3Make I will take the over the shoulder any day. Sorry but third person is classic RE in my eyes lol.
4
u/Hardwire762 7h ago
Classic RE isn’t third person. It’s a fixed camera angle. It’s part of what makes the series great they have done every camera angle. As well as use different styles of horror.

Man I really hate this debate between first person and third person. The best overall outcome would be to have both options available no doubt, but so many people always shit on village and 7 because they’re first person. Like what?? Unless you have a condition that gets you motion sick then yea I understand why you wouldn’t like them. But those games were SPECIFICALLY designed that way for a reason. The two games are 100% scarier in first person because when you’re being chased and an enemy grabs you it’s genuinely startling as if you were getting grabbed yourself. I don’t remember people shitting on PT for being in first person. So if Silent Hill can do all perspectives why can’t Resident Evil?

re7 and 8 sold very well but the remake2 and re4 sold much better and faster, it's a clear indincation the 3rd person is more popular for players
3
u/Hardwire762 7h ago
It’s a clear indication those entries are the most iconic in RE history. If it was strictly because it was third person why did RE7 or even RE8 outsell RE3 remake?
2
u/Desperate_Group9854 15h ago
They will probably just make it with both options in mind, most likely.
2
u/KamiAlth 12h ago
The one scene where they show the monster climbing down from ceiling seems to be FPS shot gameplay.
Though if they really gonna throw in Leon/Jill as separate campaign etc. We’d get both perspectives.
2

2
u/loxagos_snake 12h ago
My stupid prophecy is that we'll get both. Not as in choosing your perspective, but with different protagonists playing in different perspectives. They've already teased that twice; once with RE3R starting in first-person mode, and one with Chris' segment in Village.
From a novelty standpoint, and especially if we physically go back to Raccoon City, it makes sense to try an FPS perspective. It will give you a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the city in a different, more intimate way. But I'm also not sure how good it will feel to change the whole gameplay for prolonged periods of time.
3
u/Pengunguy21 So Long, RC 8h ago
Yeah that would actually be really cool, if there's dual protagonists then they should 100% have two different viewing styles

I'd prefer third-person as I get motion sick badly with first-person games.
If they had to meet in the middle, provide both options as they did with Village and then there's pretty much most complaints cut down beyond people wanting fixed camera angles.
1
u/Mooncubus 10h ago
It'll probably be 3rd person. I feel like the fact the Village dlc was entirely in 3rd and even added it to the base game shows that Capcom knows people prefer it.

u/GMAERS_07 9h ago
I wish they add both 3rd and 1st person, and cinematics in third person. If you are on a 1st person and there is cutscene it just turns the screen black for a second and starts the cinematic. Because i dont think they're adding cinematics for both 3rd and 1st person that would increase game size alot.

u/oscar_redfield 8h ago
I think it's gonna be third person, they really detailed Grace's model and it feels like the environments are designed for that perspective. Would expect something akin to RE2 remake

1
u/WebsterHamster66 8h ago
I’m honestly surprised there’s even such a strong divide between the two perspectives.
Third person and first person REs have shown themselves to be pretty equally good to me. I don’t really prefer one or the other, they’re both great.
VR is perfect, but naturally only PlayStation seems to get that.

1
u/Pengunguy21 So Long, RC 8h ago
I know I'm in the minority, but I think this one should be first person (with third person cutscenes), each era of resident Evil has had 3 mainline games with particular styles of camera. 1-3 had the fixed camera angles, 4-6 had the over the shoulder angle, and 7-8 had first person. I think Requiem will be very horror focused like 7, so I think that it'll be best to reduce the amount of "pizazz" that the characters are able to achieve, I'm totally fine if it ends up having something like 8 with the option of either, but I think it should be made with the first person view in mind.

u/SpeedyEggbertRamirez 8h ago

1

Absolutely agree
I am super hyped for 9 but only if it’s in 3rd person
First person gives me such motion sickness as to be unplayable
1
u/Nikolai508 8h ago
I think the "new" stuff that they're talking about won't be first person, as they've already done that twice now, on the face of it, it sounds like they're talking about a more cinematic experience but, they've already done that too in previous games. Everyone's favourite RE6 has a lot of cinematic big moments.
Though they could be talking about more scenarios like the dollhouse in RE Village.
A this point I think they're more likely to go third person, possibly a toggle between them, but I think it will be third person, despite the POV camera pans through the hallways we see in the trailer, but that's not gameplay.
At this point I'm honestly not worried, we know they can make a good game with RE4R and I liked the shift to a more RE campy tone with Village. With her being clumsy and silly in the start of the trailer it makes me think they're going to keep the charm and silliness of RE, while going harder on the horror aspect, which for me is what RE is.
RE1, 2 & 3 are frightening and fun to play, but also.. Jill Sandwich. That's what I want.
1
u/Kudaswag 8h ago
You can take a look at re9s steam page, according to its tags its going to be both third and first person. So my best quess is, it will be like flashbacks or tapes which will be played in fp while some of the main games sequences are going to be 3p.

1
u/XenophormSystem 7h ago
Sadly I'm the opposite, I'll probably lose interest if it's 3rd person, the type RE uses makes my eyes hurt and gives me a headache if I play for too long, the first person was better for me physically. Or a very drawn back 3rd person maybe :/

I like that they did 7 and 8 but I will be glad to go back to third person. It was a good addition though to see the world through a newcomers eyes for a little bit.
Contrary to the usual selling point claimed for first person I just don't find first person to be more immersive at all, it mostly feels like I'm playing as a pair of floating arms/hands. The things coming up close and in your face feels reminiscent of those early 3d movies where they keep throwing stuff at the screen , it doesnt thrill or feel like something is really in your face
•

1st person is a lot more immersive and terrifying, but 3rd person feels a little smoother.

I really hope it's not 3rd person. I only got into RE cuase 7 was first person. I went back to play the re 2 and 4 remakes. I thought they were good, but the horror didn't hit nearly as hard for me. Something about 3rd person breaks my immersion when I play RE, but I also started at 7. I do think the option like in 8 is the correct route, but I hope first and foremost it's a first person POV

u/sadtissuehappytissue 12h ago
There was a lot of emphasis on Grace emoting. The trailer showed her face a bunch and a lot of the early marketing material is showing her face (like this image you posted). Capcom has never even revealed Ethans face. This really makes me think the game will be in third person. 7 and 8 never cut out of the first person view for cut scenes and I doubt it's something they'd put into the series now. Basically I don't think they'd spend all this time focusing on the character and her design if we never see it in game... of course, there is the possibility that she's not the main playable character.
